Donkey Kong Bananza Nintendo Switch 2

Donkey Kong Bananza” is a 3D action-adventure platformer developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch 2. Released on July 17, 2025, it marks the first original Donkey Kong game since “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” (2014) and the first 3D platformer since “Donkey Kong 64” (1999). Developed by the same team behind “Super Mario Odyssey,” the game has been critically acclaimed as a “killer app” for the new console.
The story begins with Donkey Kong working as a miner on Ingot Isle when a sinister company, Void Company, buries the entire island underground. This event triggers an adventure that sees Donkey Kong, accompanied by a young Pauline, journeying to the planet’s core to recover stolen “Banandium” gems and find a way back to the surface.
A defining feature of the game is its fully destructible voxel-based environments. Donkey Kong can punch and smash his way through almost any terrain—from concrete to sand—to create tunnels, uncover hidden collectibles, and solve puzzles. The gameplay is a blend of traditional Donkey Kong platforming, action, and exploration, with a focus on using Donkey Kong’s strength and agility to manipulate the world.
As players progress through the game’s various subterranean “layers,” they encounter different biomes, characters, and challenges. These layers are large and complex, similar in scope to the kingdoms in “Super Mario Odyssey,” but with a unique vertical, layered structure. Donkey Kong can also acquire unique “Bananza” transformations from ancient elders, which grant him new abilities, such as turning into a zebra to run on surfaces or a bird to fly.
Donkey Kong Bananza also features a two-player mode where the second player controls Pauline, who uses her magical singing abilities to throw “words” as weapons and absorb powers from objects. The game has been praised for its vibrant visuals, innovative mechanics, and charming story, which many critics have hailed as a successful reinvention for the character and a worthy successor to “Super Mario Odyssey.
